Live from The Green Room Lounge Lizard
Yesterday after Blackfire, saw Ayurveda, I noticed that one of their computers on stage was adorned by a Dali-print, the one with the gnarled tree trunks that look like upside down elephants reflections in the dark water they're growing out of. It's a good visual for this trippy rockin' area band. After that, at the bandshell I was amazed by how much I liked Locos Por Juana. A Miami-based band that makes people dance with their cumbia-inspired, hip hoppy, latin-infused numbers. Sweet guitar riffs stand out to give them a recognizable sound. A veteran Grassroots going friend promises that their set tonight, in the dance tent, will be even better. She's a dancer so I'm guessing her "better" may be less electric guitar and more latin groove.
I wandered over to the Infield and caught some of Donna The Buffalo, who are a huge draw and playing at least 3 times during these four days. Playing here is so not about ego! A lot of the big draws play twice, allowing more people to see them and making their huge crowds somewhat less crowded. After I left Donna, I bumped into a friend near the dance tent and we danced until 4. And I don't dance. Lots of people from lots of bands on the stage, sounding like they played together for years and giving no indication of stopping by the time we left.
When I got here today at 3:30, I just missed Dan Lisbe and Eliot Rich of the Gunpoets doing a set in The Green Room Lounge. It was videotaped so look for it! Did I mention Blackfire did a set here last night? You'll be able to see that amazingness soon too! I got to interview them a bit and they've got a lot to say about being 3 siblings living on a reservation and starting a band together when the youngest of them was eight years old.
Another cool thing I discovered here is "The Outpost," it's an open lounge area with comfy couches and muted lighting attached to a stage area equipped with insruments and amps. You've got to be 18 to enter and I wouldn't have guessed that by the sounds I heard coming from there. This is only it's second year here but seems so fitting for this festival that I'm glad Jesse put it into operation. She said she's watched it from close by a few times and the kids are really cool about keeping things under control. Ha! That's more than can be said for some of the adults. Seriously, I have seen no problems, not even arguments. That's not to say there haven't been any, but it's certainly not a prevalent vibe.
Mary Lorsan is playing here right now.
